A square can sometimes symbolize the Earth, while a circle symbolizes the heavens or the self. Here, I’ve combined them. The proper name for this shape is a “superellipse” but it’s also sometimes called a “squircle,” which is much more fun to say.
Since it’s part square and part circle, this shape also mirrors the recurring theme in my work of the contrast between the artificial world and the natural world.
I painted the scattered shapes in this painting in the subtle tones of semiprecious stones, so that each one glows with an inner light. And the gold leaf gives them a fascinating gem like quality.
I created this abstract painting using archival-grade oil paint and natural non-toxic solvent on luxuriously thick, inch and a half deep gallery wrapped canvas. The edges are painted, so the piece is ready to hang unframed.
